Beautiful bamboo toothbrushes with natural bristles have a long history in China, but the bristle versions popular today didn't come into use until 1938, three years after Dupont introduced nylon. All the plastic toothbrushes created since then still exist. That's a lot of fossil fuels, and a lot of nonbiodegradable waste in landfills- in the US, some 50 million pounds of toothbrushes are tossed each year. It doesn't help that toothbrushes are one of the most complicated items to recycle, because they consist of so many different components: bristles, the material holding the bristles in place (usually a metal staple), and a plastic / rubber handle. You can't just drop them off at your local recycling facility without separating the components, shredding the plastic parts, and cleaning them yourself. Not to mention, weathered thermoplastics actually hold bacteria and are impossible to disinfect. Basically, plastic toothbrushes are like UberPool passengers that don't stop talking and then, at the end of the ride, try to keep in touch, forever.
An easy way to ghost harmful plastics is by switching to a bamboo toothbrush, which was one of the first things I did when I went zero waste. For five years now, the only toothbrush I've used is Brush with Bamboo. Not only is bamboo antimicrobial and biodegradable, but these toothbrushes are made from organic, wild mountain bamboo watered only by rain. The bristles are plant based- 62% castor bean oil, 38% plastic- and can be recycled. Brush with Bamboo packaging is compostable- the wrapper can be composted in a city or industrial facility, and the cardboard box folds together like origami without the use of tape or glue. They also ship plastic free, using recycled materials and paper tape.
One of the things I like best about zero waste is how beautiful everything is- high quality, durable materials infuse even the quotidian with allure. It's kind of a thrill to open my bag and whip out a bamboo travel case with a pretty toothbrush inside. Not only do people always ask where I got it, but these toothbrushes work- my dentist is really happy, and even though I don't floss (I brush in between my teeth with siwak or a neem stick, or I floss with swiss chard when it's in season... when Package Free Shop opens, I'm buying refillable, biodegradable mulberry silk Dental Lace floss in glass), I'm the only one in my family to never have a cavity. They last just as long as their plastic counterparts, too, I just store mine upright away from the shower. Efficacy and ecofriendliness aside, buying Brush with Bamboo reduces fossil fuel usage and is a non-toxic, long lasting product that's a joy to use. Plus it's a great family company to support- the founders turned their home into a model of sustainable living, producing over 5000 pounds of natural organic food per year while educating the community about ecology and urban agriculture.

How do you floss with Swiss chard?
ReplyDeleteYou have to take one of the long strings from the stalk, peel it off, and use it between your teeth. Some people rinse and reuse it- but I don't. The neem sticks and siwak are way more effective, I have crowded teeth so interdental brushes (which my dentist prefers over floss) don't fit between them. I just try swiss chard sometimes for the novelty of it. It is effective though. Other people use water piks with great success too. Apparently swiss chard has properties that help with bleeding gums but my gums don't bleed, even when the dentist flosses them (I always thought that bleeding gums were just prevented by flossing regularly so your gums get used to it but maybe not).
DeleteGonna second the question above about flossing with Swiss chard!
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting a cool giveaway!
Thanks for entering!
DeleteThis would be such a simple habit switch. The hardest part for me would be switching from a sonicare to something that doesn't vibrate, because my teeth just "feel" cleaner that way. If someone could make a more sustainable interchangeable sonicare head I'd be all over that haha! Either way I plan to phase out my current travel toothbrush & the ones I keep around for guests with these.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea!
DeleteI have a hard time with the bamboo brushes. I wish the bristles were a bit softer for my sensitive gums! But they are so much prettier that I keep using them...
ReplyDeleteAh I never thought about that with the bristles. They are so beautiful though! Like if John Stamos sat next to them on a plane he would say they were pretty
DeleteYou know, even with my ever-gradual switch to organic and sustainable products throughout our household, I've never even thought about switching my toothbrush! It had just never occurred to me. Winning this would be amazing, but I'll make the switch regardless :) Now I'm kicking myself for just recently buying new (plastic) toothbrushes though...
ReplyDeleteThank you for running this giveaway! I've had my eye on these toothbrushes for about a year now. I've been working my way through a multipack of plastic toothbrushes I once bought at the dollar store. They're almost all gone now and soon it'll be time to switch to bamboo!
ReplyDeleteReally appreciate this giveaway! I love reading your posts; they're always informative and crack me up.
ReplyDeleteRealized this account might not linked to my email, so just in case...

I've been wanting to give bamboo brushes a try, and this would be a great entry into zero waste oral health. Thanks for the giveaway, Ariana!
ReplyDeleteHi Erin! You won. Just sent you an email.
DeleteI would love to try bamboo toothbrushes.
ReplyDeleteBamboo toothbrushes are lovely. I have had issues with the handle end becoming moldy before it's due time. Or is that just me?
ReplyDeleteI've heard of this but I haven't had this problem myself... I know humidity causes this, so I just keep mine away from the shower (my sink is kind of far from the shower anyway) and upright so it stays dry.
DeleteWhat a great giveaway! Would love to try!
ReplyDeleteWheelsonthebus74@yahoo.com
Oooh, I'd love to give bamboo toothbrushes a try! It seems like a pretty easy switch, going from plastic to bamboo, so I don't know why I haven't made it yet. I wish I could find these at local stores!
ReplyDeleteSuch a logical way to avoid the use of more fossil fuels; haven't seen these before & would love to try them.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the details of your dental care regimen, and for the giveaway. I've been interested in these toothbrushes, and it's great to hear how the different components can either be recycled or composted.
ReplyDeleteI've been afraid to try siwak, because I'm worried they might get stuck between my capped teeth, but I am so excited to hear the the Package Free Shop is going to have zero-waste floss! Fingers crossed that they're waxed...!
I was worried about siwak because my teeth are sooo close together. Floss used to get stuck between it. Siwak has been pretty safe. I think the shop is going to stock Vomel floss but I'm not sure...
DeleteThank you for your reply - I might try siwak when I get the chance to buy it zero waste. I'm so glad I'm going to be back in the NYC area once the Package Free Shop opens : D
DeleteIt's Dental Lace floss! https://www.dentallace.com/ I just got some. Biodegradable mulberry silk in a refillable glass jar
DeleteI switched to a bamboo toothbrush this year, and have been wanting to try Brush With Bamboo. Have heard of siwak and neem stick but am unfamiliar with the how-to. What ratio of soap to baking soda do you use? I've enjoyed Earthpaste but want to stop buying the plastic tubes.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway opportunity!
Hi Angela! So I use soap once a day, and baking soda once a day. I know Terracycle takes toothpaste tubes, and you can recycle them if you clean and shred them yourself... but that's inconvenient. So much easier to just stop using the plastic tubes.
Delete@Stargirl - you might want to try the bamboo toothbrushes by The Green Root. I've found them to be softer than Mother's Vault, which is another brand I tried. I don't know how Brush with Bamboo is, though!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway Ariana :)
I love bamboo brushes!! I'm currently away, but I have an address in the States. Does it make me qualified for the giveaway? Looking forward to stock up for my kids :)
ReplyDeleteYes of course you are qualified!
DeleteI have a bamboo toothbrush and like it. They are too expensive to use all the time because I throw mine away a few times a years. fyi, all comments/replies go to my email address.
ReplyDeleteYes, they are more expensive than plastic once, but I apply general investing strategy here - some plastic-free choices make your budget smile compared to non-zero waste choices, others are more hefty on your wallet than plastic goods. But overall the balance is still positive and plastic-free, not to mention zero waste is a lot budget friendlier than conventional lifestyle.
DeleteEverything comes with a price tag and I think of bamboo brushes price as an investment or a donation towards a greener world.
Exactly how I feel, Galya, couldn't have said it better myself!
DeleteI would love to try these. It's been hard to make the switch of paying for toothbrushes when I get them for free at the dentist office. Your blog is so inspiring!
ReplyDeleteSinplastico.com do great floss and refillable also incase you did want to floss! Love brush with bamboo
ReplyDeleteReplies go to my google account / email address
DeleteI always wanted to try that Vomel floss!
DeleteDefinitely looking up these floss companies posted...Gave it a lot of effort last time I bought floss but didn't anything sustainable. For toothpaste I use Truth Paste!
ReplyDeleteBobbiejean @gmail dot com
I just found out about Truth Paste yesterday! What a great company.
DeleteI would love to try this! I am still using the typical plastic toothbrush, at the moment. My daughters use them as well. Please enter me for the drawing. :) heckert.samantha@gmail.com. Thank you. <3
ReplyDeleteThese are on my list to try. I am waiting for my battery operated toothbrush to die.
ReplyDeleteI would love to try the bamboo toothbrushes - my local coop was out when I went to purchase my other bulk items!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway, it's like the bamboo toothbrush !
I really do like the case for keeping the toothbrush hygienic.
ReplyDeleteIt's so beautiful and solidly constructed, I love it!
DeleteNever heard of flossing w Swiss chard! Interesting. And wow O_O! Seeing how many tons of plastic is throw away from toothbrushes is maddening
ReplyDeleteI have been wanting to try a bamboo toothbrush. I am curious to see if they work as well as a horrible plastic one!
ReplyDeleteBeing a dentist, I appreciate to this post. Choose to brush with this bamboo toothbrush as it would be ecofriendly, naturally anti-microbial, biodegradable that will not harm your teeth.Female Dentist Valrico, Lithia Dentist
ReplyDelete"Because I'm shallow" ........... ok sure... idk what that makes me then! Love you <3 #suslife
ReplyDeleteHey ariana! Huge fan. I also just sent you an email. I live on these brushes. I've tried Izola and Babu and one other brand that's escaping me and they just aren't as good nor last as long as Brush with Bamboo. Plus I love the feel of the curves on their handles and in the bristle shape. Would be honored to receive and highlight them on my blog (especially since I JUST did a post on my fav toothpaste).
ReplyDeleteWish these were sold here locally--I've been wanting to try them!
ReplyDeleteI just got my first bamboo toothbrush last week! It's amazing and so cute! Sadly mine has blue(why?), plastic (why?) bristles, so trying the brush with bamboo ones would be incredible, especially because the import fees to my country are high buying from out-of-country online stores</3 Brush with bamboo is staying on my wishlist nevertheless. Have a great day!❤️
ReplyDeleteI think I didn't get my username posted--in any case, I've been wanting to try these, thanks for offering a giveaway! Best, Vickery
ReplyDeleteWe've been using bamboo toothbrushes for a while. The only issue we've had is one started loosing its bristles within the first day or two (my husband ended up with a mouthful of bristles!).
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try these! They are so beautiful...for a toothbrush, and I love that they are environmentally friendly. How soft are the bristles? I have sensitive gums so I have to buy the soft bristle toothbrushes.
ReplyDeleteMy mom and grandma have really sensitive teeth and they both said separately they feel the bristles are more gentle than the conventional plastic ones they usually get
DeleteBeen wanting to try the brush with bamboo! We've been looking into the different brands of bamboo toothbrushes! Excited to potentially try them!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Kaitlin
My friend gave me one of her Bamboo Brushes to try and I absolutely love it. I am due for a new one but currently I struggle with making some choices work with my current budget since my family regularly purchases plastic brushes that would be of no cost for me to use. Do you have any tips for aspiring zero-wasters that live in a non-zero waste house?
ReplyDeleteAlso I subscribed to the comments.
Hi Sarah! That's a tough one. http://www.paris-to-go.com/2016/04/zero-waste-life-with-non-zero-waste-family-members.html Also I think there are some tips here: http://www.paris-to-go.com/2016/04/zero-waste-packing-list-for-college-university-living.html
DeleteHopefully you'll win this and your family will try the toothbrushes and love them so much they won't go back to plastic!!
Brilliant! As I am moving soon I'm looking for more and more ways to cut waste out of my lifestyle. My last toothbrush was recycled plastic, but this is even better!
ReplyDeleteblaze2242 at gmail dot com
You won! Just sent you an email.
DeleteI want to try out those bamboo toothbrushes, Just wondering how do you recycle the bristles?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Brian.Barlow164@gmail.com
The Brush with Bamboo website linked above has a whole page on properly disposing of every part of the toothbrush!
DeleteWould love a set of the smaller kid-sized bamboo brushes.
ReplyDeleteHi Leslie! You won! Please email ariana at paris-to-go dot com within 48 hours with your mailing address and just confirm if you want all four of the toothbrushes to be kids' sized or if you prefer two kids', two adults. Thanks!
DeleteI love my Brush with Bamboo brushes. I was concerned how my first trip to the dentist would go after switching and it was fine! It was even more fun to refuse the plastic toothbrush they offered me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for setting this up! Excited about bamboo brushes, no more plastic ones for me... hopefully.
ReplyDeleteSo cool you're hosting this giveaway. Thanks Ariana!
ReplyDeleteI have been very curious about bamboo toothbrushes. They look so cool! Thanks for hosting a giveaway!
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting this giveaway. I always wanted to try a bamboo toothbrush. I am working on reducing my hygiene and beauty products and would love to replace my toothbrush with a bamboo one.
ReplyDeleteI would like to try these- I've been just using free plastic from the dentist. They should stock these instead.

Thanks for doing this giveaway, Ariana! I've always wanted to try bamboo brushes but haven't seen them available in local stores. I am interested in seeing whether the bristles are longer lasting than the ones in plastic brushes.
ReplyDeleteV.S.
I have long wanted to try these. I love the case- I don't think I had seen that before. Thanks for having the drawing! Four brushes are enough for the whole family to switch to Bamboo.
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing a giveaway! I love those brushes, I used a different brand in the past that I got from a store in Lyon. After buying that one I've been hooked on bamboo brushes. Four adult size ones if you please. email is btaylor510@yahoo.com

ReplyDeleteHi Kaitlyn, you won! Could you please send an email within 48 hours to ariana at paris-to-go dot com with your mailing address and whether you want 4 adults, 4 kids, or half kids' half adult toothbrushes? Thanks! DeleteThis is something I haven't changed in my zero waste journey yet but I would love to! Seems really cool. Thanks for running the giveaway! -- Carissa.hogan92@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteEvery day I wake up and there is some new innovation, invention or proposal where the soul goal is to create a more sustainable and Earth friendly system. I would love to win this give away as it will help with my pursuit of a minimal waste life style. But even if I don't win, I'm just excited that so many people are excited about these products too!
ReplyDeleteI am a 20-year old university student, and I just recently started to apply elements of the zero waste lifestyle into my own life. I've become fascinated by all of the plastic that products of every kind are made with or packaged in, and how all of this has become "normal" in society. I am so excited to start living in a more simple and sustainable way, thank you for hosting this cool giveaway! shioncarter@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteID love to be able to jump start my zero waste living here in the States and a give away seems lile the greatest help since now
ReplyDeleteI have moved
ReplyDeleteLove that brush with bamboo has come out with a kids brush!
ReplyDelete-Jalyss Zapfletts
This would be so perfect because I am on my last bamboo toothbrush, I had given the last of my stash to some friends who were interested in zero waste-ing. Just the other day, my mother was so excited to be able to start using hers once her plastic toothbrush wore out. The bamboo toothbrush was the very first zero waste swap that I made and one that I would never go back to plastic. I agree with you about the beauty part of it also- so much prettier than any green or pink plastic brush! erin.gericke@yahoo.com (PS I love your instagram feed!)
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful!! Im glad im able to learn about how horrible tooth brushes that arent these are! Em.apodaca@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteThank you for spelling out the pros of bamboo toothbrushes!
ReplyDeleteI, too, want to know more about swiss chard floss?!
I finally switched the kids toothbrushes to bamboo and it's time to get the grown ups in the house on board. Thank you for supporting and teaming up with this awesome company! Caroline.b.vargas@gmail.com

Hi! I picked them out and emailed everybody but if someone doesn't respond within 48 hours a new winner will be chosen :)
DeleteI always let toothbrushes fall off the list zero waste/plastic free list but after long term travel where the amount of plastic on beaches was a(nother) wake up call, including *so many toothbrushes....* they are bumped up. We picked up a bunch of them on a remote beach in Borneo where they give you a beverage in exchange for you picking up a garbage bag's worth of plastic trash off of the beach. I'm too late for the contest but psyched to switch over. Thanks!
